Teen charged £510 for illegally downloading one song
HERE'S a story to send a shiver down every parent's spine.
Schoolboy David Hay is being charged £510 for illegally downloading just one song from the internet.
The 14-year-old was caught after digital spies electronically tagged party anthem Jumping All Over The World.
The record firm tracked David to his home in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.
Their 20-page dossier accuses him of downloading the track by German band Scooter.
Digi Protect say he has infringed their copyright and have given him 28 days to pay.
They also threatened legal action which could cost David's family thousands.
The mess started in February when David downloaded the track from website Ares.
His dad Stuart admits it was wrong but says the fine is excessive.
Stuart, 55, said: "David downloads the odd track but what teenager doesn't?
"Now just before Christmas they hit us with this massive fine. To ask for that kind of money is crazy. I want people to know this can happen.
"It wouldn't be so bad but it is a bloody awful song."
I contacted DigiProtect's solicitors Davenport Lyons to plead the Hay's case.
They said: "Copyright owners spend millions of pounds on works for sale to the public yet many think it is acceptable to obtain the work illegally.
"But we may be able to reach a compromise on the amount owed."
Failing to pay up could land the Hay family in bother. A Brighton man refused and ended up with a £5000 fine and £13,500 legal bill.
Millions of innocent music lovers like David download tunes. But be warned...stay within the law or get stung.

They have done this on purpose to create the story and to stop people downloading illegally. It will stop some people from doing so which is their aim.

I wouldn't download any more if I were you. I don't do it. It's too risky now.
Re: Teen charged £510 for illegally downloading one song
I bet that's scared him of ever doing it again.

His dad probably sold his computer to pay the fine. That's what I'd have done if it were my teenage son.
(oh god, I have still to endure having a teenage son... eek!)
