Grange Hill the album
Thirty years ago, children’s TV changed forever with the arrival of hard-hitting school drama series, Grange Hill.
The first episode was broadcast on Wednesday 8 February 1978 and its young target audience immediately loved it. The final episode was aired on Monday 15 September 2008. Fans all around the country were devastated to say a final goodbye to this piece of TV history.
To celebrate this extraordinary feat, EMI are releasing a whopping triple CD album of songs that reflect the early (and some say the best) years from 1978 to 1985, Grange Hill: The Album – a nostalgic collection of the hits that defined the era. Grange Hill: The Album is a step back in time to the biggest ska, rock and pop tunes of the decade, when all we had to worry about was holding on to our lunch money, whether the dog had eaten our homework or who was snogging who behind the bike sheds!
Grange Hill, like Rubics cube, leg warmers and Maggie Thatcher, sums up an era. It was a changing time for music, when influences from 70s punk and pop were morphing into the early 80s new romantics, rock and ska bands that remain iconic to this day. Didn’t we all snarl into the mirror as we copied Billy Idol’s, 'Rebel Yell’, back-combed our hair like Cyndi Lauper on 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, do the Madness dance to 'Baggy Trousers’, played our air guitar as though we were Brian May on 'Don’t Stop Me Now’ or swooned over our pin-ups Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet as we sang along to 'Girls on Film’ and 'True’?
Grange Hill: The Album will be available to buy at all major high street and online retailers from 3 November.
