Tilly & The Wall - Beat Control
Fab fivesome Tilly And The Wall have released two albums since 2004, but somehow they have not achieved the success they deserve. Their earlier songs were similarly joy-inducing, but this latest offering indicates that the band have evolved their sound. While the earlier tracks make you feel like you have been invited to a fun evening round their house, Beat Control excitedly grabs you by the hand, takes you to the coolest venue in town and makes you dance all night.
The song may sound simple, but a lot of clever hard work has obviously gone into it. The track starts with sweet vocals, then intensifies line by line and layer by layer. It introduces a mix of breezy acoustic guitars, heavy basses, funky drums, synths and beats aplenty, leading you to a happy place of childlike wonderment. Rainbows and rose-tinted spectacles included.
It's just a shame Beat Control lacks the tap-shoe signature of Tilly And Co's earlier days - Jamie Pressnall tends to stand in for the drums with her kooky tap-dancing skills. Still, we shouldn't really complain because this is absolutely lovely anyway.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Band members Jamie and Neely Jenkins were formerly in a group called Park Ave with Bright Eyes maestro Conor Oberst. Tilly are also signed to the label Team Love, which Conor founded.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Beat Control is released as a double-A side with Too Excited on September 15.

Very bland and poppy.
