Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby' signature auctioned off

A hospital account report bearing the signature the woman who Paul McCartney has suggested inspired The Beatles' 1966 hit 'Eleanor Rigby', has sold at auction for 115,000.

The paper, which is 97 years old, was auctioned at London's Idea Generation Gallery last night (November 27), reports BBC News. It features the signature of an E Rigby, prompting the speculation.

As previously reported on NME.COM, McCartney, who wrote the song's lyrics, sent the document to the Sunbeam Trust charity, prompting speculation that despite the band members previously maintaining that Rigby was a fictional character, she may in fact have been real.

According to the hospital record E Rigby was a scullery maid who worked at the City Hospital in Liverpool The Beatles' home city.

Ted Owen, managing director of the Fame Bureau, said, "I wonder just how much Paul McCartney meant to unmask when he passed it on."
