The Kooks - Sway
You either love them or hate The Kooks, so it's quite likely then that this track will further enhance the gap between the lovers and the haters. Single number three from latest album Konk, rock ballad 'Sway', is a far cry from their previous two release choices.
'Sway' follows the routine of a slow and delicate build-up, leading to an intense and passionate chorus. This will no doubt leave teenagers nationwide swooning at Luke's feet, but at the same time repel those who crave the chirpy indie pop that The Kooks are known for.
If you listen to the composition from an objective standpoint, it isn't all that bad. There's a lot of emotion in the song and that's probably its saving grace. Guitarist Hugh's input is certainly due credit, providing an added depth which hints towards the blues. Couple with this some impressive strings, which come out of nowhere halfway through, and it's not far from being quite likeable.
Kooks fans will marvel at the strength of Luke's voice, whilst others will complain about his nasal-sounding tendencies, but one thing is sure: the man knows how to convey feeling through song. If you still shriek with excitement when you hear 'Naive', then you'll love this. Anyone else, steer clear, it'll just annoy you after a few listens.
