Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand are to be suspended and all their shows taken off air until the BBC has investigated their prank calls made on Radio 2.

The news was announced in a statement by director general Mark Thompson.

It follows a series of calls made by the pair to actor Andrew Sachs on Brand's Saturday night programme.

Brand told reporters: "It would be silly of me to speak without thinking because that's caused all this trouble in the first place."

He added he was sorry he upset Sachs, famous for his part in Fawlty Towers, over comments made about the actor's granddaughter.

The calls were broadcast as part of Russell Brand's pre-recorded show on 18 October.

During the calls, Ross swore and said Brand had slept with Sachs' granddaughter.

More than 18,000 people have complained to the BBC.

Mr Thompson said he would be returning from a holiday and would "in the coming days, announce what action we will take".

"Since Sunday, I have been in regular contact with the senior executives I tasked with handling this issue," he said.

"In the meantime, I have decided that it is not appropriate for either Russell Brand or Jonathan Ross to continue broadcasting on the BBC until I have seen the full report of the actions of all concerned.

"This gross lapse of taste by the performers and the production team has angered licence payers."

He added his "own personal and unreserved apology to Andrew Sachs, his family and to licence fee payers for the completely unacceptable broadcast".

BBC One show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross was due to have been filmed at BBC Television Centre, west London, later on Wednesday.

Guests on the show were to have been Sir David Attenborough, comedian Frank Skinner, US teen singer Miley Cyrus and band The Killers. The BBC said people with tickets to be in the audience should not attend.

A decision has yet to be taken on what should be shown in its place on Friday night.

Ross's Saturday morning radio show, as well as Brand's Saturday night radio show, have also been pulled from Radio 2's schedules.

Meanwhile, Ms Baillie, 23, told the Sun the pair should "pay for what they've done with their jobs".

She said her grandfather, who is 78, was "really upset and says he wants the whole situation to end".

"What's funny about humiliating a lovely old man who has never harmed anyone in his life?" she added.

She said Brand and Ross were "beyond contempt".

"It was bad enough that they recorded these things on my grandfather's answer machine but astonishing the BBC saw fit to broadcast it when they could have stopped it.

"Someone high up at the BBC must have decided it was funny and suitable for national radio. They've shown an appalling lack of judgement."

On Tuesday afternoon, Sachs told the BBC that Ross had "personally delivered a letter of apology and some flowers" since the broadcast.

He has not "heard anything" from Brand, the actor added.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown criticised the pair for "inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour", while Conservative shadow culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said in a speech on Wednesday that it was "wrong for broadcasters to produce programmes that legitimise negative social behaviour".

He told BBC News the corporation's reaction to the affair was "concerning".

Jonathon Ross started it all off and then it just went wrong from there. If they would have done it to me I would have just laughed it off. I don't see what all the fuss is about? Hasn't Gordon Brown got anything better to do with his time?

Noel Gallagher has said he is "outraged" at the furore surrounding his friend Russell Brand's radio scandal.

Presenters Brand and Jonathan Ross are suspended from the BBC after making prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs, during which they made comments about Brand sleeping with his granddaughter.

Brand subsequently quit his post as a BBC Radio 2 presenter.

Gallagher told BBC Radio Ulster's Across The Line show that he believed that the media furore surrounding the incident was an overreaction, and described the incident as "at worst a juvenile prank."

"I spoke to Russell, he told me he was going to fall on his sword," Gallagher said. "Personally, I'm outraged that, yet again, the joyless fuckers who write the columns in the Daily Mail, The Telegraph or The Observer have dictated the tone and are telling people how to behave.

"I've seen the Daily Mail, they said that Russell should be arrested and charged. Arrested for what? For taking the piss? It's so typical of the English in general. 10,000 people get outraged, but only days after it has happened."

Gallagher added: "At worst it was a juvenile prank that wasn't unfunny but it's hardly offensive. I feel bad for Russ, 'cause he really loved doing the show. I loved being on it as well."

More of the interview with Gallagher will be broadcast Across The Line's Monday evening (November 3).

The Killers and Glasvegas were caught up in the Brand/Ross scandal, with the former having their appearance on 'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross' pulled and the latter having an appearance on 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' shifted.

DISGRACED Russell Brand yelled “Qué?” as he romped with the granddaughter of Manuel actor Andrew Sachs, it was revealed yesterday.
But Georgina Baillie, 23, said that despite his ladies’ man reputation, he was a “disappointment” in bed.

She told of Brand’s Fawlty Towers send-up as he QUIT the BBC and Jonathan Ross made a grovelling apology over the vile phone calls scandal.

Brand fell on his sword after the number of complaints about the pair’s radio humiliation of Sachs rocketed to 30,000. He said he took “full responsibility” for the offence caused.

And today crisis talks were being held at the top levels of the BBC.

Trust members were holding a special meeting of their editorial standard committee into the lewd calls.

Ross, 47, who has an £18million three-year deal with the BBC, said he had made “a stupid error of judgment”.

Brand, 33, resigned after he and Ross were suspended by the BBC.

Bosses also axed this week’s Friday Night With Jonathan Ross TV chat show and his Saturday morning radio slot.

The storm erupted after the pair called 78-year-old Sachs, who created a TV legend with Manuel, during Brand’s Radio 2 show.

They left a message on his answer machine saying Brand had “f***ed” Georgina and suggested the news could make the elderly actor kill himself

The abusive messages left by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross on Andrew Sachs's answer phone and the Mock The Week 'joke' about the Queen was far from the only offensive material on the BBC recently.

Both prerecorded and live shows across its channels had repeated references to smutty and degrading subjects.

Here the Daily Mail prints some recent extracts.

We apologise to readers who may be offended.

The Graham Norton Show, BBC2, October 23, 10pm. Repeated Sunday

Norton asked his guests Thandie Newton and Ricky Gervais to read a pretend film script in which Sarah Palin - America's Republican candidate for vice president - is made out to be a porn star.

Norton (reading the part of narrator): Sarah unbuttons her blouse.

Newton (reading the part of Sarah Palin): Why don't you feast your eyes on Mama's jugs?

Norton: She lifts her skirt and starts rubbing herself.

Newton: It's time to drill baby. Drill hard and deep. Come on you tree-hugging hippy. What are you waiting for? Congressional approval?

Norton: The business partner wakes up and unzips his pants. Sarah licks her lips and grabs his p***s.

That Mitchell And Webb Look, BBC4, Tuesday, 9pm

The second in a series of short comic sketches in the comedy shows a group of characters pretending to rehearse for a Christmas pantomime in a village hall. The scene starts with a young blonde woman 'raping' the panto Dame using a sex toy.

Dame: Oh nooooo. Oh nooooo, stop it.

Messenger: Guys, guys, listen up. It's bad news. I've just been talking to the parish council and they strongly feel we should drop the Dame rape from this year's panto. 'Rapist': But it's traditional.

Dame: It's everybody's favourite bit.

Director: What? What next? I suppose they are going to tell us that we can't have Cinderella s***ing off the panto horse.

Messenger: Well, they did voice some concerns.

The Chris Moyles Show, BBC Radio One, yesterday, 9.20am

A young couple have been on a date organised by the breakfast show team.

Moyles and his co-presenters are discussing the date and quizzing the couple about whether they liked each other.

Moyles says to girl, who admits she doesn't see the boy as boyfriend material, 'couldn't you at least have done it with him once, a sympathy one, anything.'

The Wrong Door: Smutty Aliens, BBC3, September 11, 10.30pm

During this sketch show set in a parallel universe, a girl called Sue is abducted by aliens.

Alien 1: Behold! The fastest ship in the whole world. The hyperian w*** sock.

Sue: It looks like a giant c***. [Two Aliens and Sue board a space ship in the shape of the male genitalia.]

Alien 2: Engaging the lesbolian c*** drive. [The alien makes sexually suggestive movements with his hand.] The dialogue becomes even more crude and explicit in the subsequent exchanges.

Love Soup, BBC1, April, 9.20pm

The 'comedy' portrayed an extremely violent and realistic suicide of a woman leaping from a ten-storey building and smashing into the concrete pavement.

It transpired that the woman had left behind a dog which was then adopted by Milly - played by Montserrat Lombard.

Viewers were then treated to a scene of this young woman, kneeling naked in the bathroom to retrieve a contact lens, apparently being raped by the dog. Viewers were shown the labrador passing the bathroom door and then a pair of dog paws on the woman's naked shoulders in the scene lasting seconds.

Viewers learned that the suicide victim had been having sex with her dog for many years - and the animal had effectively been trained to target a kneeling woman. Laughing about the incident around a canteen table, one of the characters quips: 'There is love and attention - and [there is] being rogered by a dog'.
