Razorlight - Wire to Wire

Johnny Borrell, now there's a man who's been teetering on the edge of taking himself too seriously for a while. Strewn with high-pitched comic rock warbling, hair-tossing, daft posturing and more pretension than you could wave a copy of Spinal Tap at, "Wire To Wire" could just push the wannabe rock god and icon of our times over the edge. Were it a hidden track at the end of an album, this painfully overwrought piano lament with its spandex squeezed harmonies would be just about forgivable.

To put it out as a first single from a new album shows just how misguided and divorced from reality Razorlight and their illustrious leader are. "She lives by disillusion's glow / We go where the wild blood flows", Johnny quivers before asking, "How do you love with a face full of rust?" Quite. How could you have gone from the simple brilliance of "Golden Touch" to this overblown nonsense in just four short years is more to the point. The only saving grace is that it's short.
